Monkey
Playing EVE again tonight. I think I usually play this game to relax. The peace of space, the beautiful music. I guess I like being small-time, laid-back, casual. I did a little mining with my Venture, and then I took the SAC Elspeth, my Corax, out for a spin.
The Corax is still new to me. I fly Caldari and use missiles—as dictacted by the archetype—so finally getting a missile destroyer was really cool. And, I really like rockets. Maybe that stems from when I first started playing: Frigates are the first ship, so I should max that out… Rockets are the smallest missiles, so I should start with those… And, I just kind of stayed there. Sometimes I think: But there are battleships! There are torpedoes! But… those are expensive, and I don’t have the skills for them. And battleships are so goddamned slow I want to puke in rage. I can honestly say there’s no appeal there. At all.
I like small ships. T2 frigates, and this new missiley destroyer. That’s fun to me. Well, “satisfying” is probably a better word. I’m not really at the edge of my seat, eyes lit up, squealing with delight… but I smile a bit, thinking: this is a nice little ship. I tend to look for excuses to use them. I think some people, especially the hisec mission-running carebear stereotype, look at the rewards for level I and level IV missions, then rush for the big ships for the big payouts. But, if I use little ships, little payouts are fine. And rockets are so fast! They’re like squirming explodey bullets! I press all my buttons and it’s just, psssshhhh! Smoke trails everywhere and little nibbling explosions! It’s neat.
So yeah. Elspeth just did a little onboard scan and cleared a little pirate site, frigates and a few cruisers as bosses. And, I mashed the screenshot button, with mixed results. It’s become a habit with me, screenshotting constantly. I think it’s more for record-keeping than “I can’t wait to tell everyone on the Tumblers!”
…
If you’re having fun, the rewards don’t matter, right? That’s what a game should be; it should entice you to have fun. It’s its own reward. It shouldn’t just be a treadmill, grinding for bigger and bigger payoffs. So, there’s no shame in staying small-time if that’s what I want.
But… is that really what I want?
Meanwhile, Jita’s burning, a thousand Rifters are doing whatever a thousand Rifters do, and someone’s getting into the WSJ for blowing up a thousand PLEXs.
But the sun will still rise tomorrow.
Well, whatever. I’ll just stop before I bum myself out too much more.
